Relationship between C. difficile and antibiotics questioned

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, October 9, 2008

A recent study by Dr. Sandra Dial from the Research Institute of McGill University Health Center (MUHC) and attending staff in the intensive care unit at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Canada, finds that C. difficile infections are not necessarily linked to antibiotic use, according to a MUHC press release.

Focusing only on non-hospital acquired C. difficile infections in patients aged 65 and older, the study found that 53% of the patients had no antibiotic use during the 45 days prior to hospitalization for C. difficile. According to the press release, the researchers believe that, while antibiotics play a role in C. difficile infections, there are other important factors that need to be explored.
