New trial begins to test effectiveness of investigational pneumococcal vaccine
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, September 25, 2008
On September 23, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals announced the beginning of the Community Acquired Pneumonia Immunization Trial in Adults, a study which will evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational vaccine hoped to prevent the spread of community acquired pneumonia, according to a Wyeth press release.
The trial will test an investigational 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. While the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, which is anticipated to include about 85,000 participants 65 years of age and older, is mainly focused on community acquired pneumonia, the trial will also explore the vaccine's potential to prevent all-cause pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease, according to the press release.
