More Americans receive health insurance through Medicare and Medicaid

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, September 4, 2008

The percentage of Americans who received health insurance through work or purchased health insurance on the private market declined last year, while the percentage of Americans who received insurance through Medicare and Medicaid rose, The Wall Street Journal reported recently.

Those findings were part of a U.S. Census Bureau report on income, poverty, and health in insurance coverage in 2007.

The report found that the percentage of Americans insured under Medicare or Medicaid that year increased from 27% to 27.8%, and the percentage covered under a private insurance program fell from 67.9% to 67.5%. Although the percentage changes may be small, the shifts represent millions of people, according to The Journal
