New ICD-9 CM coding guidelines available

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, August 14, 2008

Two departments in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including CMS and the National Center for Health Statistics, are providing new guidelines for ICD-9 CM coding and reporting.

These guidelines were developed to accompany the official government version of the ICD-9 CM coding instructions, and are organized into four sections:
  • Structure and conventions of the classification and general guidelines that apply to the entire classification, including chapter specific guidelines
  • Guidelines for selection of principal diagnosis for non-outpatient settings
  • Guidelines for reporting additional diagnoses in non-outpatient settings
  • Outpatient coding and reporting
