Medicare makes unnecessary overpayments

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, May 22, 2008

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Inspector General (OIG), has released a new report titled “Reviewing Skilled Services at Heartland Health Care Center of Bedford, Texas.”

The report states that for the period of July 2, 2002 through May 31, 2003, the facility received $158,000 in Medicare payments for 47 claims for skilled services. These services were not either medically necessary or properly supported by documentation.

The recommendation is that Heartland pay a full refund of $158,000 to Medicare and that they provide staff training on SNF medical necessity and documentation requirements. To read the full report, click here.
