CMS released the proposed rule for 2009 SNF PPS
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, May 8, 2008
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the proposed rule for the Prospective Payment System (PPS) and Consolidated Billing for Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) for Fiscal Year 2009.
This proposed rule updates payment rates under PPS for better accuracy. CMS announced that in Fiscal Year 2009 Medicare payments to skilled nursing facilities will decline by 0.3%. The proposed $60 million cut in reimbursement was derived from the proposed 3.3%, or $770 million, reduction in order to offset the case-mix indices (CMIs) set in 2006. However, a proposed increase of 3.1%, or $710 million, in payments to nursing homes based on the 2009 “market basket” will level off most of the cut in Medicare reimbursement.
CMS is accepting comments on the proposed rule through June 30, 2008.
