Electronic medical records can reproduce errors
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, May 1, 2008
Using electronic medical records has caused some caregivers to reproduce errors, according to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine.
According to the article, authored by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center physicians and Harvard Medical School professors Pamela Hartzband, MD, and Jerome Groopman, MD, physicians and other medical professionals often cut and paste information in the medical record rather than type it in by hand. Cutting and pasting removes a level of analysis when the record is updated, and also can perpetuate earlier errors in later versions of the record.
