Elderly persons taking antipsychotic drugs have a 60% increased risk for developing pneumonia, according to a study published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. This study is the first to show a relationship between antipsychotic drug use and pneumonia. According to the study, the risk of developing pneumonia is highest during the first week of taking the antipsychotic medication and gradually decreases as time passes.
