Obese seniors need more long-term care services

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, April 24, 2008

Elderly who are moderately to severely obese are at a greater risk of needing long-term care services because of the increased risk of disabilities associated with obesity, according to the American Geriatrics Society. Researchers at Purdue University studied 4,600 seniors who did not live in nursing homes at the time of the study; of those studied 39% were normal weight, 39% were overweight, 15% were mildly obese, and 6% were moderately to severely obese. The study found that seniors with moderate to severe obesity struggle with activities of daily living and were more apt to need assistance or long-term care services.
