New York nursing homes admit more residents for short-term stays

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, April 17, 2008

New York nursing homes are having to take on many short-term residents in the wake of hospitals dealing with budget cuts, reports The New York Sun. Hospitals are being forced to treat patients quickly and discharge them, according to the article, and therefore nursing homes are being forced to renovate and prepare for a shorter-term boarder.

The number of short-term patients in nursing homes has more than tripled between 1996 and 2005, from 29,000 to more than 135,000. Hospitals are being pinched financially and New York nursing homes are being restructured as a result.
