CMS releases new ABN form
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, March 7, 2008
On March 3, CMS released the revised version of the Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) (CMS-R-131), according to an agency annoucement. The new form replaces the general use ABN and the lab ABN for physician-ordered laboratory tests. It can also be used in place of the Notice of Exclusion from Medicare Benefits form.
Features of this form include:
- A mandatory field for cost estimates of the items/services at issue
- A new beneficiary option, under which an individual may choose to receive an item/service, and pay for it out-of-pocket, rather than have a claim submitted to Medicare
