Rates of drug-resistant infections are on the rise

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, February 22, 2008

As many as 70% of infections may now be resistant to antibiotics, The Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC) said last week. The professional association called for increased prevention measures to help prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAI). "New strains of MRSA, such as the pUSA03-positive strain, provide evidence that the very nature of these organisms is changing -- producing infections that are increasingly resistant to our strongest antibiotics," said Kathy Wayne, APIC's CEO.

APIC supports a culture of zero tolerance toward non-compliance with measures proven to prevent HAIs, she said, such as proper hand hygiene, barrier precautions such as use of gloves and gowns, and proper equipment cleaning and decontamination.
