Medicare's Part D drug program enrollment on the rise

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, February 7, 2008

The number of enrollees in the three-year-old Medicare Part D drug program is climbing, even as costs for the program drop, U.S. health officials announced last week, according to a Forbes report.

"Overall, costs for beneficiaries and taxpayers are considerably lower than originally projections, enrollment continues to rise and customer satisfaction remains very high," Kerry Weems, acting CMS administrator, told reporters.

But many others criticize the program for its high co-pays on some drugs, its inability to negotiate lower prices with the drug industry, and its overall complexity, Forbes reports.
