Medication reduction can reduce fall risk among residents

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 31, 2008

A newly released Swedish study claims that curbing the amount of tranquilizers and antidepressants administered to nursing home residents and using wheelchairs and bed rails selectively will reduce falls among elderly, according to the Journal of Clinical Nursing. The study looked at residents in 21 nursing homes over a four-year time period. The study found that the residents in a wheelchair, needing bed rails, or using a safety belt were more often then not also taking sleeping pills and antidepressants, according to the study.
