Determine whether a pressure ulcer infection is present

A colonized wound will heal. An infected wound will not heal. If the ulcer is not healing, suspect infection.

 

Many tools are available to help you determine whether wound infection is present. In addition to evaluating the appearance of the wound, take a look at the whole picture. To assess the resident:

  • Evaluate vital signs
  • Evaluate the wound
  • Evaluate drainage
  • Assess pain
  • Consider additional lab testing
