FDA approves two-hour blood test for staph

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 10, 2008

BD Diagnostics has announced that it received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a test to quickly identify the presence of two deadly infections often associated with healthcare facilities-Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-from positive blood cultures.

The company said the tests provide results within two hours, are easy to perform, and require less technologist time than traditional microbiology algorithms, which can take two days.

The rapid tests will allow for more appropriate isolation procedures and agent-specific antimicrobial therapy, ultimately reducing mortality, length of stay, and healthcare costs, according to the company.
