Causes of autonomic dysreflexia

Autonomic dysreflexia is a potentially life-threatening complication of spinal cord injury. It usually occurs in residents with injuries above the midthoracic area or the sixth thoracic vertebra. The most common causes of autonomic dysreflexia are bladder problems, such as the following:

  • Overfull bladder
  • Irritation of the bladder wall
  • Urinary retention
  • Blocked catheter
  • Noncompliance with intermittent catheterization schedule
  • Overfilled urinary drainage bag or leg bag
