Tip of the week: Starting background checks in your facility

Here are some tips for beginning a program of background checks at your facility:
- Investigate programs used by facilities in other states. Doing this will give you a sense of how things are run, and it will give you a chance to see how programs differ in states that have no laws regarding background checks or that have closed records.
- Find out what's going on in your area. Is your facility the only one that hasn't yet jumped on the background-checking bandwagon? If so, you should consider conducting regular checks. Research the programs that are out there so you know where you stand.
- Find a guru to guide you. It's imperative that you find out who is the local authority on background checking. Police departments or background-checking agencies can help you initiate a program at your facility or test the effectiveness of a current program.
- Seek counsel. Consult with legal experts to initiate a program. Remain in touch to prepare for any situations that may arise in which you would need legal advice or defense.
