Study finds strong ties between pharmaceutical manufacturers, medical schools

Pharma Compliance Alert, October 24, 2007

The chairs of more than half of the medical schools and teaching hospitals in the U.S. have ties to the pharmaceutical industry, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The department chairs at 125 accredited medical schools and the 15 largest independent teaching hospitals in the U.S. were surveyed, with 459 of 688 eligible chairs completing the survey. Of those who responded, 60% reported some form of personal ties with the pharmaceutical industry, such as:

  • A paid consultant
  • A member of a scientific advisory board
  • An officer or executive of a company
  • A founder of a company
  • A member of a board of directors
  • A paid speaker

The study is the first to examine the extent of relationships between pharmaceutical companies and medical schools and hospitals.
