OIG reports on ASP and AWP
Pharma Compliance Alert, October 3, 2007
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) released its review of average sales price (ASP) and average manufacturers price (AMP) for Medicare Part B prescription drugs.
Medicare Part B reimburses costs for a limited number of outpatient drugs. It bases reimbursement on ASP. An ASP is defined as "a manufacturer's sales of a drug to all purchasers in the United States in a calendar quarter divided by the total number of units of the drug sold by the manufacturer in that same quarter."
The OIG compared ASPs and AMPs to find when the ASP exceeded the AMP by 5% or more. For 15 of the 34 Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes studied, the ASP was more than 20% higher than the AMP.
