Pharma companies aren't the only targets of law enforcement

Pharma Compliance Alert, September 26, 2007

Editor's note: This is the second in a two-part series reporting on the panel discussion at the recent CBINET Tracking State Laws and Aggregate Spend conference.

During the recent CBINET Tracking State Laws and Aggregate Spend conference, Dan Miller, deputy attorney general and director of the Medicare fraud unit in Delaware, said he currently has open investigations in all areas of healthcare, but added pharma has been hit with a lot of whistleblower lawsuits.

When people see the judgments against pharma companies, "They start thinking, me too," Miller said.

Pharma companies are targeted because they are big, national, and have the ability to pay multi-million dollar fines, according to Miller.

"As long as states are paying for healthcare, we're going to look at everything we can to control costs," Vermont state senator Ann Cummings said.
