CMS focuses on DME fraud

Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, August 13, 2007

Last month, the Department of Health and Human Services, of which CMS is a part, announced a project to stop DME fraud. The project focuses on South Florida and Southern California, areas identified as high-risk for fraudulent DME billing.

The project will last two years and requires DMEPOS suppliers in those areas to reapply for Medicare participation. To read the press release click here.

In a proposed rule issued this month, CMS says it wants to require DME suppliers to furnish a surety bond. The press release announcing the rule called it "another HHS step in an ongoing effort to combat Medicare fraud with particular focus on DMEPOS suppliers."
