ACCME to examine current commercial support standards

Pharma Compliance Alert, August 8, 2007

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) plans to examine how well it identifies, develops, and promotes standards for CME quality and how those standards are applied during accreditation. The ACCME announced the plans in a letter to Senators Max Baucus and Charles Grassley, who earlier this year sent the ACCME a letter expressing concerns that commercial interests influence the content of CME and asking whether the ACCME's existing guidelines are sufficient.

During its board of directors meeting in July, the ACCME identified five areas on which it would focus to address the senators' concerns. According to the letter, the ACCME will:

  • Enhance the collection, analysis, synthesis, application and dissemination of data and information about the ACCME system

  • Review, and if necessary modify, the processes for administering its standards

  • Review the management of commercial support and consider alternate funding models

  • Consider expanding and refining its education and outreach programs for learners, faculty, commercial supporters, and CME planners

  • Collaborate, cooperate, and communicate with stakeholders
