China executes ex-drug official for taking bribes
Pharma Compliance Alert, July 11, 2007
China executed this week the former head of its food and drug administration after he was convicted of taking bribes from eight companies and dereliction of duty.
Zheng Xiaoyu was a drug and food safety chief. According to Reuters, it was discovered that he and his subordinates abused rules for renewing drug production licenses in order to get kickbacks from companies. Consequently, several medicines that should have been rejected or taken off the market were approved, including six fake ones.
Reuters reports that the execution is the first of such a high-ranking official since 2000. However, it illustrates the Chinese government's vigilance in cracking down on corruption and safety issues in light of the recent spate of safety problems coming out of products from that country.
