Senate hearing examines drug industry ties with doctors
Pharma Compliance Alert, July 4, 2007
During a hearing last week, Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Herb Kohl said he would propose a national registry to require disclosure of pharma payments and gifts to doctors. Kohl held the hearing to examine financial ties between doctors and drug companies, saying he would "vigorously pursue stronger adherence" to existing disclosure guidelines.
The hearing included testimony from physicians and representatives from PhRMA, the AMA, and Public Citizen, among others. According to the testimony, pharmas are now biggest sponsors of continuing medical education courses. However, PhRMA defended the practice, saying that although pharmas may sponsoring CME, they have no control over the content, reports the Washington Post.
