Doc who said GSK tried to silence him will testify during Avandia hearing

Pharma Compliance Alert, June 6, 2007

When a congressional committee digs into the safety of GlaxoSmithKline's diabetes drug Avandia this week it will hear from a prominent physician who says GSK tried to stifle his criticism of the drug.

Dr. John B. Buse, in line to become the American Diabetes Association president, wrote to the FDA in 2000 about his concerns that Avandia might increase heart attack risk, reports The New York Times. However, in a statement published by The Times, Buse says that he was "intimidated" in 1999 by the company and that GSK later apologized. He did not elaborate on the nature of the intimidation, instead saying he would tell the entire story during his testimony, reports The Times.
