Utah sues Lilly over Zyprexa marketing

Pharma Compliance Alert, May 23, 2007

Utah became the latest state to sue Eli Lilly for allegedly misrepresenting the risks of the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa. The lawsuit also accuses the company of persuading doctors to prescribe Zyprexa for off-label uses such as anorexia and Alzheimer's, reports the Associated Press.

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff filed the lawsuit, in which the state seeks civil damages and penalties, including Medicaid losses for inappropriate prescriptions. In fact, the state is seeking $5,000 to $10,000 for each medically unnecessary prescription.
