NYT digs into drug makers' payments to psychiatrists in MN

Pharma Compliance Alert, May 16, 2007

Aside from the logistical difficulties that come with state marketing laws, a recent New York Times article shows another consequence: conclusions being drawn about what payments to doctors mean.

The Times article last week analyzed drug companies' public reports of payments to Minnesota doctors. The paper intended to link financial relationships to a rise in the use of antipsychotic drugs in children.

According to the analysis, the data suggests that doctors who were paid by drug companies prescribed these drugs to children more often. Psychiatrists in Minnesota collected more payments than any other specialty from 2000-2005, and those doctors who received at least $5,000, "appear" to have written three times as many of these prescriptions, according to the report.
