CMS reverses plans to expand carotid stenting coverage
Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, May 7, 2007
In a blow to stent manufacturers, CMS reversed plans to expand Medicare coverage for using stents in neck arteries for stroke prevention. CMS published the decision on April 30.
Medicare will limit eligibility to only to a small number of patients, a reversal from a proposed decision memorandum in which CMS said it would expand coverage for the procedure. The more conservative approach is in response to criticism from surgeons about the safety of carotid stenting, according to The New York Times.
Abbott Laboratories said the decision is disappointing to patients, reports The Times. To read more about the decision, go to the CMS Web site.
