Former Chinese drug regulator faces charges of taking kickbacks for approvals

Pharma Compliance Alert, April 11, 2007

A former Chinese drug regulator is about to go on trial on charges that he took kickbacks from drug makers in exchange for drug approvals. Zheng Xiaoyu was China's director of the State Food and Drug Administration until he was removed from his post in late 2005 in light of the allegations, reports several U.S. and Chinese news outlets.

According to the reports, Zheng took cash, a car, and other gifts from drug makers, including the Hainan Kangliyuan Group, which is accused of giving Zheng bribes in exchange for approvals of 277 drugs.

One of the drugs Zheng allegedly approved for bribes was an antibiotic responsible for at least 10 deaths before it was removed from the market, reports Business Week.
