Pfizer gets reprimanded by UK agency for journal ad

Pharma Compliance Alert, March 21, 2007

Pfizer got a slap on the wrist earlier this month when the United Kingdom's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) requested that the company withdraw one of its ads because of potentially misleading claims.

The ad in question was for the antibiotic Zyvox and appeared in the British Medical Journal. According to MHRA, the ad claimed that Zyvox had "superior cure rates compared to products containing the active ingredient vancomycin." However, at the time the ad ran, Pfizer was in discussion with MHRA about emerging concerns about the efficacy and safety of Zyvox compared to vancomycin.

Pfizer suspended the ads, and MHRA told the company to continually review ads in light of new information that may emerge about its drugs.
