Stanford Medical Center joins others in pharma gift, sample ban

Pharma Compliance Alert, September 13, 2006

Stanford Medical Center is the latest academic medical center to enact a policy prohibiting physicians from accepting industry gifts of any size, including drug samples, it announced yesterday. The policy applies to physicians practicing anywhere on the medical center campus or at any off-site clinical facilities where they may practice.

The policy also bans pharma, bio-device, or any related industry reps from patient care areas and medical school facilities, except for in-service training on devices and equipment. Even those visits will be by appointment only. It will also only allow industry support of educational activities under well-regulated conditions.

The new policy will go into effect October 1, and was unanimously approved by the medical school's executive committee. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania enacted a similar ban in May.
