Congressional leaders probe NIH scientist’s pharmaceutical ties

Pharma Compliance Alert, August 16, 2006

Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to the National Institutes of Health last week seeking details about a researcher's ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the letter was prompted by an earlier report from that paper about Dr. Thomas J. Walsh, a senior researcher at the National Cancer Institute, who has in the past accepted fees from Pfizer and Merck, and has led clinical trials that investigated pharma company drugs.

In their letter, Rep. Joe L. Barton (R-Texas), Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), Rep. Edward Whitfield (R-Ky.), and Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), requested documents including all internal financial disclosures that Walsh filed from 1995 to 2005. They also asked for copies of any policy that "permits scientists as part of their official duties to assist drug companies with presentations to FDA advisory committees or FDA staff."
