Massachusetts Senate passes drug rep licensing proposal

Pharma Compliance Alert, June 7, 2006

The Massachusetts State Senate passed a proposal last week that would require drug reps to be licensed, reports the Boston Globe. The proposal would also prohibit reps from giving gifts, payment, or entertainment to doctors, healthcare facilities, or public officials. If passed into law, Massachusetts could become the first state in the nation to require such licensing.

Under the measure, reps would have to complete training before receiving their licenses, and participate in continuing education.

The proposal was passed as part of an amendment to the state budget. In order for the proposal to become law, the state House of Representatives must give its approval after a House-Senate conference committee forms a compromise budget plan, according to the report.
