FDA issues warning about transdermal patches and MRI

Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, March 16, 2009

Transdermal drug patches with metallic backing can overheat during an MRI scan and cause skin burns in the immediate area of the patch, according to the FDA.

The FDA is reviewing the labeling for medicated patches to ensure all patches that contain metal include the appropriate warnings. The FDA recommends that healthcare professionals advise patients to remove the patch before an MRI and replace it following the scan.
