Senator questions Wyeth about ghostwriting

Pharma Compliance Alert, December 17, 2008

Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) believes Wyeth paid ghostwriters to create articles favorable to the company’s female hormone replacement therapy Prempro even after a federal study linked Prempro to breast cancer.

In ghostwriting, a marketing or medical communications firm outlines or writes an article, then has a prominent physician or scientist sign on as an author, Grassley wrote in a letter to Wyeth.

Medical journal articles are widely read by practitioners, who expect the articles to provide unbiased scientific information. However, companies may be using some articles to advertise a product instead, according to Grassley’s letter. He called attempts to manipulate scientific literature and mislead physicians “very troubling.”
