Exec sentenced to probation in Serono fraud case
Pharma Compliance Alert, October 1, 2008
Rudolph Liedtke, president of RJL Sciences, will pay $10,000 and serve three years of probation for allegedly conspiring to increase sales of a drug to treat AIDS wasting, according to a release from the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Leidtke admitted he and others, including Serono Laboratories, distributed software for a device Serono used to diagnose AIDS wasting even without weight loss so Serono could increase sales of its drug Serostim.
Liedtke cooperated with federal authorities and pleaded guilty in April 2005 to conspiring with others to disseminate, without FDA approval, adulterated computer software devices to promote diagnoses of AIDS wasting and to increase sales of an AIDS wasting drug.
In December 2005, Serono pleaded guilty and paid a total of $704 million to resolve criminal and civil charges against it in the largest Medicaid healthcare fraud global settlement to date.
