Senator questions ties between industry, cardiology group

Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) questioned the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) ability to remain impartial after the ACC announced a five-year partnership with the Cardiovascular Research Foundation.
In a letter to ACC President Douglas Weaver, Kohl asked Weaver to:
- Explain how the partnership was established
- Provide copies of the formal agreement
- Disclose any financial exchanges between ACC and the Cardiovascular Research Foundation for the past five years
- Identify board members or officers who served or are serving on both boards
- Report all financial support provided by the medical device industry
The foundation receives financial support from the medical device industry and is working with ACC to develop part of the ACC Annual Scientific Session. Kohl questioned whether the partnership would adversely influence the content of the session.
