Grassley: No disclosure, no funding from NIH

Pharma Compliance Alert, September 17, 2008

Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) wants the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to withdraw funding from any university if a researcher does not properly report financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry, according to a Wall Street Journal article.

In a letter last week, Grassley criticized University of Texas researcher Karen Wagner for not disclosing more than $150,000 in consulting and speaking fees she received from GlaxoSmithKline while working on studies involving the company’s antidepressant Paxil. Grassley has criticized other universities, including Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Cincinnati.

The Senate Finance Committee, where Grassley is the ranking Republican, is questioning at least another 20 universities about possible conflicts of interest.

Although not everyone is convinced the NIH can or will be able to pull grants, universities stand to lose a considerable amount of funding if Grassley is successful. NIH handed out more than $23 billion in grants last year. Since 2000, the University of Texas has received $5 billion in NIH funding.
