FDA to get more power?
Pharma Compliance Alert, August 6, 2008
The FDA will be able to levy fines, order drug recalls, and restrict drug-industry advertising if Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Representative John Dingell (D-MI) have their way.
The two congressmen, both outspoken critics of the FDA, want to restructure the agency to reduce industry influence, according to a Wall Street Journal article.
The congressmen also want the agency to inspect generic-drug makers before approving new products and would allow the agency to impose significant fines.
Congress is unlikely to make major changes this year because it has only a brief session before the November elections, according to the article.
