CMS provides DMEPOS competitive bidding update
Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, July 28, 2008
Now that the Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies competitive bidding program has been delayed, CMS has issued two e-mail updates about accreditation and payment of claims:
- The accreditation deadlines for the second round of competitive bidding have been cancelled. That means suppliers don’t have to have at least applied for accreditation by July 21, to be eligible to submit a bid for the second round of the program and they don’t have to be accredited by January 14, 2009, to be eligible for a contract in the second round of the program. DMEPOS suppliers do still have to be accredited by September 30, 2009, however.
- Medicare claims for DMEPOS in the 10 areas selected for the first round of competitive bidding will be paid under the standard DMEPOS fee schedule, retroactive to June 30. CMS will attempt to reprocess claims already paid or denied under the competitive bidding program but warns the supplier may need to let the contractor know a claim needs reprocessing. CMS plans to start paying claims by July 29 and any claims that were held by CMS should be paid by August 4.
