CT scans can interfere with medical devices
Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, July 21, 2008
Computed tomography (CT) scanning can lead to malfunction in implanted and external medical devices, a preliminary public health notification from the FDA warns. In a small number of reported cases, CT scans interfered with the proper function of devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and infusion pumps.
The FDA will continue to investigate the issue and recommends that when a patient undergoing a CT scan has an internal or external medical device, the provider try to move external devices away from the scanner, temporarily have patient shut of neurostimulators, or minimize exposure to the x-rays.
