House votes to delay DMEPOS competitive bidding
Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, June 30, 2008
The House of Representatives voted 355-59 Tuesday to delay the implementation of the Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies Competitive Bidding project by 18 months, according to an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The project is slated to begin July 1. The Senate is considering a similar bill. The House of Representatives bill would terminate contracts already awarded while the Senate bill allows reduction in current Medicare rates for DMEPOS to offset the delay.
In other news about the competitive bidding project, eight ombudsmen will serve the selected competitive bidding areas offering information and education and handling complaints and concerns about the project. Contact information for the ombudsmen is available on the DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Implementation Contractor (CBIC) Web site.
Zip code files for mail order and non-mail order zip codes within the selected competitive bidding areas are also available. New information concerning payment, down coding, and other procedural concerns is available in Phase 2 of Chapter 36 of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual (CR6119).
