Probe into GSK's Paxil expands

Pharma Compliance Alert, June 25, 2008

More questions are being raised about GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) antidepressant Paxil, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer article.

On June 12, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter to the FDA asking the agency to determine whether GSK withheld information about the suicide risks associated with Paxil.

On Thursday, GSK confirmed it is also being investigated by Justice Department offices in Colorado, Boston, and Washington for its alleged off-label marketing practices for Paxil.

In 2007, GSK paid $64 million to settle a class action lawsuit claiming it misled consumers about Paxil’s safety. In settling the suit, GSK denied claims it promoted Paxil for use in children while withholding information about serious negative side effects.
