OIG collects $2.2 billion in healthcare fraud

Bristol-Myers Squibb’s $499 million settlement for alleged price fraud, kickbacks, and False Claims Act violations helped the OIG recover $2.2 billion from healthcare fraud in the first half of Fiscal Year 2008.
 
In its Semi-Annual Report to Congress, the OIG reported it:
  • Excluded 1,291 individuals and organizations for fraud and abuse
  • Instituted 293 criminal actions against individuals or organizations that engaged in crimes against HHS programs
  • Took part in 142 civil actions, which include False Claims Act and Civil Monetary Penalties Law settlements
