Merck extends signup deadline for Vioxx settlement
Pharma Compliance Alert, May 7, 2008
Patients who claim they were harmed by Merck’s now withdrawn pain reliever Vioxx have until June 30 to take part in a proposed $4.85 billion settlement, according to a Reuters article.
Approximately 94% of those eligible for the settlement in the U.S. have already signed up for the settlement, according to the article.
To be eligible for the proposed settlement, patients or their survivors had to have filed a Vioxx product liability lawsuit in the United States by November 9, 2007, or have signaled officially by then their intent to file a lawsuit for alleged heart attacks, stroke, or death as a result of Vioxx.
Merck stopped selling Vioxx in September 2004 after a clinical trial showed Vioxx increased the risk of strokes and heart attacks in some patients.
