DMEPOS competitive bidding contracts being finalized
Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, March 31, 2008
CMS predicts its competitive bidding project will save Medicare and its beneficiaries 26% on DME and prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies. Bidding on the project has been completed and the contracts with the winning bidders are being finalized. Because beneficiaries have a 20% co-payment for such items, they will also share in the savings, says CMS.
Suppliers will be announced when the contracts are complete. The program will begin implementation July 1, 2008, in:
- Charlotte, NC
- Cincinnati
- Cleveland
- Dallas
- Kansas City, MO
- Miami
- Orlando
- Pittsburgh
- Riverside, CA
- San Juan, Puerto Rico
A March 21 CMS press release discusses the savings on devices such as hospital beds, diabetic supplies, and oxygen concentrators.
Approximately 64% of the suppliers offered contracts in this first round of the bidding project are small suppliers that have gross revenue of $3.5 million or less.
