Senator wants information on Schering-Plough marketing plan

Pharma Compliance Alert, March 19, 2008

Schering-Plough is facing questions from Congress about its plans to boost sales of its cholesterol medication Zetia.

In a letter to Schering-Plough, Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, asked the company for information on its "49 Plan," in which sales representatives are allegedly asked to wine-and-dine physicians for seven weeks in an attempt to bolster failing sales of the drug.

Kohl wants the company to turn over a written description of:

  • The 49 Plan including its stated goals and mission
  • The number of sales representatives involved and their compensation
  • How the plan will comply with industry guidelines with regard to ethics, conflicts of interest, and provision of information to physicians
  • Any information on internal oversight to ensure sales representatives remain in compliance

Kohl gave the company a deadline of March 28 to supply the requested information.
