CMS offers update on competitive bidding for DME
Device Regulation Alert: Safety, Compliance and Reimbursement News, January 14, 2008
In a January 8 press release, CMS announced the expansion of the competitive bidding project for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies, adding 70 new participating areas. CMS also touted the bidding project's ability to find "unscrupulous suppliers" and prevent fraud and abuse.
The press release reiterates the savings expected for Medicare as a result of competitive bidding and the standards and accreditation requirements for participating suppliers. CMS predicted pre-bidding steps such as defining the zip codes within the competitive bidding areas and other bidding information will be released this spring with the bidding to begin this summer.
