DC could soon license pharmaceutical sales reps
Pharma Compliance Alert, December 19, 2007
The District of Columbia took one more step towards becoming the first jurisdiction to require pharmaceutical sales representatives to be licensed last week, The Washington Post reported.
The District council voted 7 to 6 to initially approve the SafeRX Act of 2007, which would require pharmaceutical sales representatives to be licensed by the D.C. Board of Pharmacy, be college graduates, follow a code of ethics, and refrain from providing gifts to physicians. The act also bans the use of prescribing data for marketing purposes unless a physician chooses to share his or her prescribing habits.
The Act must still pass a final vote on January 8, 2008.
